The style Boulle became known after French cabinetmaker André-Charles Boulle, a master of marquetry and considered to be the preeminent artist in the field of marquetry. His fame led to his name being given to the fashion he perfected of inlaying brass and tortoiseshell, known as Boulle. The distinctive type of inlay that Boulle developed and that bears his name consists of tortoiseshell with inlay in brass, pewter, or copper. His influence continued into the late 19th Century.
